Road to the Playoffs

By Jackson Nester

The Owasso Lady Rams played the Sand Springs Sandites on Tuesday, September 29, at Owasso. The Lady Rams played a good game, but lost 8-6. This was Owasso’s final home game for the season, and they are on their way to the playoffs now.

I got the chance to interview pitcher Lauren St. John, No. 20— who pitched the final five innings of the game and allowed only three runs. I asked Lauren what this game meant for the playoffs and for the rest of the season.

She replied with, “This game meant a lot for the season; it decided if we got home field for districts and, because we lost, we have to travel away for the first playoff game, which is not what the team was hoping for.”

Luckily, because of COVID, fans haven’t really made as big of a difference as previous seasons; however, you still want to play on your homefield and avoid travelling whenever you can.

After the game, Lauren listed off one way they can improve and be better for the next game.

Lauren said, “We need to play a lot better in the first couple of innings, letting up that many runs isn't going to allow us to win.”

The first couple of innings proved vital for the Rams as they let up seven runs which set the tone for the game. The final question was how the team is going to prepare for the playoffs.

Lauren answered, “We need to work on our hitting and focus more in the first couple of the innings and we should be alright.”

The Rams in the first five innings only got a couple of hits compared to the Sandites fourteen. However, things were looking up in the last inning when they got five hits and rattled off three runs. It wasn’t enough to win the game, but ended on a good note for the next game.

The Rams play in Regionals against Union at Choctaw on October 6, so head out there and go support your Lady Rams as they head into the playoffs!
