Weird Holidays to Celebrate at Home

May:

19th- World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day

Given the current state of our economy, now may be the perfect time to start a vegetable garden. There is no risk of others touching your food. It could potentially become a great way to relieve stress, and it allows you access to your favorite vegetables from the comfort of your own home. With that said, Bob Matthews, the creator of this holiday, wants people to focus more on the act of gardening rather than the content of what is gardened, so feel free to pot a flower or plant a zucchini to celebrate.

25th- Towel Day

Grab your favorite towel and start carrying it wherever you go because today is Towel Day. This holiday is dedicated to the late Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and who is beloved among fans. To celebrate, you can immerse yourself in the book, show, movie, or even the live Stand Up for Towel Day comedy event while comfortably wrapped up in a towel at home. In this way, you can honor his work, although, if you’re so bold, another option is to gather friends and roam the streets with towels that say “DON’T PANIC” which, ironically enough, can make others panic more.

June:

1st- Flip a Coin Day

One coin is all you need to make any decisions for the rest of your day. For example, can’t decide whether to get a trim or to go fully bald? Flip a coin. Don’t know if you want to respond to your friend with a heartfelt paragraph or with just a simple “k?” Flip a coin. It’s that easy. Doing this can definitely turn an ordinary day into a semi-less-ordinary day in no time.

14th- Monkey Around Day

There are a couple of ways you can go about celebrating Monkey Around Day. You could take the title as a metaphor for doing what you want without any hesitation, like a monkey, or you could do things relating to monkeys. If you chose the latter, it would mean dedicating some part of your day to monkeys such as acting like, drawing, or researching about them. Eventually, you understand the culture of monkeys and aspire to be one but the sun of tomorrow has arisen and you must revert back to your human self. You were sad for a moment but ultimately felt like it was a good day.

18th- International Panic Day

Although the name implies that now is the time to panic, this day is really more about what makes you panic and how to go about relaxing. Seeing as we are in a global pandemic, this is just what people need. To celebrate, give yourself a spa day, a little dance party, or a nice walk, and don’t let any current stressors impede your happiness. This may not be the weirdest of holidays but it should be given more recognition, especially at a time like this.

July:

24th- Tell An Old Joke Day

This holiday is meant to make sure old jokes don’t die, but what that really means is that every suppressed dad joke you have in your mind will now be given light. Those along with classics such as “Why did the chicken cross the road?” are perfect jokes to celebrate today. While this holiday doesn’t sound too great, who knows, maybe not all of them will be bad and some you may even enjoy.

27th- Take Your Houseplants for a Walk Day

The house plants you may have, along with the flower you potted a little while ago, are in dire need of a walk. Not necessarily because they need a walk per se, just more sunlight compared to what it would get from inside the house. Technically you could sit your plant outside for a bit and get the same result, but then that wouldn’t be following good holiday spirit.

August:

6th- Wiggle Your Toes Day

Be honest, when was the last time you wiggled your toes? It’s probably been a while, and for some reason, many people recognize that, which is why this entire day is dedicated to letting your toes feel free. Many people suggest walking through grass or water to further celebrate, which could also feel nice.

8th- Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day

You know that zucchini you planted a few months ago? Well, now is the time to put it to its real use. As the forward name states, today is the time to sneak some zucchini onto your neighbor’s porch. The goal is to do this without being caught and for the recipient to enjoy the zucchini, so please do not attempt without first knowing what they’re allergic to and if they enjoy zucchini.

28th- Race Your Mouse Day

Do you ever shake your mouse viciously across the files on your home screen while impatiently waiting for something to load? Great! That’s exactly how you celebrate Race Your Mouse Day. Why this holiday exists or what exactly your mouse will be racing is beyond me, but it’s fun nonetheless, so why not celebrate by doing something most of us do in the meantime anyway.
