Tulsa Missions: Opportunities To Help Around You

By Jack Fenner

Seeing people struggle with poverty is one of the most saddening things you can come across. While it’s impossible to help every single one of them, you can still make a difference in countless lives if you go to the right places. In Tulsa, there are many different ways and organizations that enable you to help.

1. Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma

This food bank is probably the organization that I have the most experience with. Members of my church have spent countless hours volunteering here to do what they can to help those in need. It’s more simple than you’d think to volunteer here: all you have to do is go to their website to schedule a time to help! When you get there, your job will be to pack different food items that have been donated by the community in order for them to be stored for those in need in Tulsa. It's a simple job to make a significant impact in people's lives.

2. Family Promise of Tulsa County

The organization leaders of Family Promise are some of the most dedicated and devoted people I have ever met. Family Promise’s job is to provide shelter and assistance to the situationally homeless in Tulsa. This is no small task as a lot of outreach is required to help these people get back on their feet. Finding shelter for such a large number of people is difficult for Family Promise to do by themselves, so they reach out to churches across the Tulsa area in order to give them a place to stay. At night, these families stay in the churches and receive meals so that they can focus on their search for a job. My church was one of these that provided shelter and it was an overwhelmingly positive experience. Being able to help reduce the stress on these families is something that is important to not only the families but also the impact it has on our community as a whole.

3. The Coffee Bunker

The Coffee Bunker is a little different from the other organizations. It’s main focus is to provide a place for veterans to go and be social together while they are trying to return to their civilian life. Volunteering here makes a significant impact for these people who have done all they could to protect our freedom. I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of the regulars at The Coffee Bunker and if you have the time, I highly recommend volunteering here to meet and help these wonderful people.

Through these services you will be able to meet amazing people who are dedicated to improving the lives of as many as they can. When you meet these people and simultaneously improve the lives of others, the experience is nothing short of amazing.
