Rams Varsity Cheer, eighth win at state!
By Olivia Voth
Owasso’s Varsity Cheer squad won first at the state competition on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022. The competition was held at Union High School, and the pressure on the competing teams was definitely on. With a new competitive division and a new routine, the cheerleaders had their work cut out for them and slayed the game regardless.
Owasso Cheer arrived at UHS excited to compete in a new division since this year’s all-girl squad was no longer competing in the “Co-Ed” division. The team wanted to prove they could perform just as well in their new competitive field. With new divisions, however, came new teams to compete against, including Edmond North, who won state in the “All-Girls” division the previous year.
The Owasso cheerleaders have had their own set of struggles in preparing for this season but were thankfully not highly intimidated by the other teams. Thanks to all the hard work they have put into this season, their only challenge was getting their energy up and maintaining focus upon arrival to the competition. However, these obstacles proved to be mere trifles as the team had a huge success.
“Honestly, everything went smooth throughout the day; we were all checked in and focused on the routine,” says senior cheerleader Hailey Campbell.
The cheerleading teams are judged based on a range of categories, including stunts, tumbling, motions, voice projection and other points of focus throughout the performance. The Owasso cheer team beat their runners-up in nine of 15 categories listed on the judging rubric. The Owasso team’s state performance excelled most in the categories of crowd involvement, stunts and overall impression, which led to their huge victory.
The final score for Owasso Varsity Cheer was 277.8 out of 300 points. The runner-up, Edmond North Varsity Cheer, was 273.8 out of 300 points. Owasso Cheer has once again proven their skill and perseverance by busting the doors down with win number eight. Congratulations to Owasso Varsity Cheer!
