Prom: how to find THE DRESS

By Olivia Voth

Every school year from January to April, the junior and senior girls of Owasso High School have a very exciting, though stressful, time choosing the statement garment they will grace the dance floor with on prom night. However, with so many different ideas to choose from, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out where to start looking. Luckily, there happens to be a perfect method to find THE dress for any formal event.

The most sensible way to start for a somewhat smooth and easy prom dress shopping experience is to figure out one’s budget because retailed prom dresses can range anywhere from one hundred dollars to one thousand dollars. Topping that off, some of the formal dress shops with wider selections can be hours away. Keeping these things in mind can help you decide the best mode of dress shopping, whether it be online, second-hand or retail.

Aside from shopping mode, it’s best to think about colors and cuts. What type of bodice is most flattering? Ball gowns are large and beautiful, but can be challenging to maneuver in. Additionally, it’s difficult to decide on fabric texture and accents. Sequins, while super groovy, can get itchy easily, and trends such as feathers, florals and beading can be difficult to choose. Remembering to have an open mind while choosing a dress is important.

It’s best to start dress shopping early on, even in January, to ensure that the selection hasn’t been picked through. Additionally, if ordering one from a shop or online site, one must allow plenty of time for it to be shipped in so that they are certain to have a dress in time. Those ordering online will often select and order another backup dress in case their first choice either doesn’t come in on time, or doesn’t meet their expectations. Furthermore, many dresses need alterations to fit properly, which requires additional time and money in order to feel and look their best.

Many retail prom shoppers opt for their dress shopping experience to take place at Glory Prom in Vian, Oklahoma, with a large selection of designer dresses. However, for those who choose not to drive an hour out, there are many stores closer to Owasso. Another favorite is Glamour Gowns in Broken Arrow, which recently named a new owner. Also in Broken Arrow is Facchianos Bridal and Formal Attire. Many of these stores ensure that no two students from the same school buy the same dress from their store by keeping records to prevent mishaps. These small businesses offer a unique experience for anyone seeking their one-of-a-kind formal dress.

Aside from these small business options, there are several other chain stores at the Woodland Hills Mall and other areas of Tulsa. Dillards, Macy’s and Windsor are popular options for those shopping at the mall. David’s Bridal is another more convenient option. With so many options to choose from, dress shopping is truly a ‘write your own adventure.’

Whether it’s thrift, bought online, retail or DIY, wear something that makes you feel radiant on the most memorable of nights. Regardless of which path you choose, there are a plethora of ways to find your perfect dress this prom season.
