Owasso student art showcased at Philbrook Museum of Art
By Isaac Worley
Art students from Owasso High School recently submitted their work to the Philbrook museum, and many pieces are featured in the museum’s BIG Show exhibition. The installation acts as a means to inspire young artists and encourage further creativity.
Student submissions were not limited to any specific medium so long as their piece was less than 12 inches by 12 inches. Any student from ages 4 to 18 could submit art for the installation.
Though the exhibition did not operate as a competition, the opportunity for students to display their art in a major museum offers motivation to many students, including sophomore Kaydan Rogers.
“It’s amazing to think that I can go and see my art in one room and just across the hall is a Picasso,” Rogers explains.
Mrs. Collins, one of Owasso High School’s art teachers, echoes Rogers’ sentiment.
“I don’t think many artists will be able to say in their lifetime that they had a piece in the Philbrook,” Collins elaborates. “I just saw it for the opportunity it was and couldn’t let it go by without entering some pieces.”
Philbrook created the exhibition to inspire young artists and foster creativity; the opportunity encourages students to pursue art as a career or a hobby.
Rogers adds, “for many of us it’s our first show, and it’s a good foundation for our portfolios.”
The museum space is set with interactive elements, and visitors are encouraged to act on their inspiration. Philbrook has included spaces where individuals can create their own artwork while viewing the exhibition, furthering the theme of creative expression.
Collins states that the showcase will give students “motivation—inspiration to just keep making art.”
Philbrook offers free admission for students, and admission includes access to any public area of the museum. Those who attend can see art from their peers, explore other exhibitions and visit the renowned Philbrook Gardens.
Mazzie Demkowich, another featured artist, encourages all Owasso students to visit the exhibition.
“Everyone has a good, unique style, and I feel like it’s good to support kids from here,” Demkowich expresses.
The BIG Show exhibition ended on May 8, so congratulations to the students who participated in the event.
