Owasso baseball takes on the Sunshine State

Post-Update: Owasso Baseball takes 6A State Champions!

Both of the Owasso Varsity and Junior Varsity teams headed down to Florida for a couple weeks during spring break to face out of state competition. The boys went down with a hefty goal of winning the tournament, and they came away with exactly what they wanted. Owasso’s varsity team took the hardware back to Oklahoma as they won the tournament after playing only a few season games before the tournament began.

The baseball team, however, did not have a total cakewalk in Florida, as they faced some fierce competition. One team had even beat the Rams in one of their regular season games before the tournament.

Senior Braden King admits, “The loss taught us that if we don’t come out ready to play, we will get beat, and we also have to play to our standard each and every game.”

The Rams held themselves up to that standard for the rest of the games despite all of the challenges that were faced in Florida.

King mentions, “almost all of the teams were really solid and we were not used to the sun and the heat down there compared to what it is like in Oklahoma.”

The boys made the most of the heat during the games as well as afterwards. They all had a great time going to the beach and amusement parks which made the trip feel like sort of a vacation. Still, they came to the beach for one reason and that was to win the tournament. There were a few different motives for why they wanted to win, one of which being team gear.

King adds, “The tournament gave out jackets, bags and hats to the team that won the tournament, so we wanted to win that. We also joked about conquering the state of Florida and that was the last game in our way.”

The tournament win was special for the Rams, but something that could have been just equally as special for the team was earning Coach Turner his 1200 win as Owasso’s head coach. They celebrated by getting him to wear a chain, a crown on his head and then eating at the Golden Corral.

The Rams went down to the Sunshine State and came away with their tournament win. There are still a few games left to play as the Rams main goal is winning state this year. Look for Owasso’s schedule and go support your Rams!
