Girls’ golf team takes home hardware
By Jackson Nester
The Lady Rams’ golf team took home medals Wednesday, March 30 as they placed second at the Jenks Invitational tournament. This was the first time the team placed in the top three since the spring of 2019, which was when the current seniors were freshmen. So as you could imagine, this was an exciting moment for the Lady Rams. This was a rewarding feeling for the girls, as all their hard work finally paid off for them. One cause of this hard work is the new coaching staff for the team, including Coach Johnson, Coach Sanchez and Coach Cantrell.
“The coaches have helped a lot, we’re running golf drills, such as putting drills, chipping drills and long iron drills,” remarked Brooklyn Williams, a sophomore on the team.
Along with the coaches and new drills, the team has been able to connect on a deeper level than years prior. Chemistry is one of the most important factors in any sports team and no team can really win without it.
“We’re like a family; we know almost everything about each other; we tell each other everything and we trust each other,” said Williams.
This chemistry can turn a good team into a great one, and this development can already be seen with them earning a medal in their last tournament. Another key component of a good golf team, but more importantly a good golf player is their mental toughness.
“You’ve got to keep your head high, not let it get to you and not get mad when you hit a bad shot,” Williams expressed.
This can be said for most sports, but in golf it’s seen by many as the most important aspect of golf. The slightest movement of a club can err a shot in any direction, so by staying calm you’re able to focus on the ever so slight movements you have to do. Mental toughness is a tough ability to acquire, but with the new coaches and drills, the girls have been able to stay a lot more calm and collected than years prior.
By acquiring this calmness and chemistry, the girls have some colossal goals for the season.
These include, “winning a tournament, placing as high as possible in every tournament and ultimately winning state,” commented Williams.
These are unreachable goals for a lot of teams in the state, but with the way the Lady Rams are playing this season, no goal is too big. With that being said, they will be competing in their one and only home tournament Monday, April 4 where they look to get their first gold medal of the season. Make sure to go out and support your Lady Rams this season!
