Legacy holds 4th annual Drive-Thru Christmas Parade

On Saturday, December 2nd, the Legacy Family Network joined with Battle Creek Church to host the fourth-annual drive-through Christmas parade for foster and adoptive families. Initially created due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the parade was designed to give foster and adoptive families an opportunity to spread some Christmas cheer.

The parade is just one of many events the Legacy Family Network puts on to support families in Northeastern Oklahoma.

“We support the families who have adopted or are fostering. Our goal is connecting, equipping, and supporting each family,” informs Rebekah Lane from Legacy. “We walk alongside them on this journey!”

The Legacy Christmas Parade is as ingenious as it is festive. Instead of floats, participants form lanes of decorated cars while foster families drive through the parade and receive candy, toys and more. Many of the participants went above and beyond to create a fun, festive atmosphere, and some even dressed in holiday costumes.

One group of women proudly displayed their decorations, including nutcrackers, a Christmas tree and the leg lamp from “A Christmas Story.”

“We set it up in approximately ten to fifteen minutes,” laughed one of the women. “One year, we did a gumball machine, and that was a lot more prep and trial and error.”

Not everyone had such elaborate decorations, however. One mother who, despite the cold, sat in only a lawn chair with her two children, took part in the parade with a smile on her face.

“We just love what Legacy does,” said the mother, Anna Rangel.

Despite the enjoyment of the extravagant festivities, attendees explain that there is a much more important goal of the parade.

“It’s good to get our kids more used to serving and wanting to give back to the community,” shares Brent Dobson, a member of Rejoice Church. “If you get ‘em doin’ it while they’re young… the same thing will happen [with their kids].”

Brent Dobson, among many others, values the children involved above all else. At the end of the day, the event was created to bring families closer together to themselves and to their community—and it did just that. Legacy Family Group and Owasso’s church community gave foster families a Christmas to remember.
