Into The Arcane: A Netflix Review
By Ryan Bright
Few shows truly go beyond viewers’ expectations, let alone those based on video game franchises. One of these shows is Arcane, managing to overtake Squid Game in popularity. Arcane came out of nowhere in its rise to No.1 show on Netflix, earning a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Only League of Legends fans expected much from this venture, yet the show requires no knowledge about the game to get invested in the story. Arcane has proved that it deserves such recognition; many have even compared it to the likes of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and Miyazaki films in terms of incredible writing and eye-catching visual appeal.
“You’ve got a good heart. Don’t ever lose it. No matter how hard the world tries to break you.” - Act One
In the first act, the show throws the audience right into the heat of the story, taking them from the dramatic introduction to the overarching conflict. From this moment, it’s easy to sympathize with the main characters, something that makes the later episodes impactful. It introduces the main conflict between the Undercity and Piltover, representing the hatred that can form between opposing socioeconomic classes. The viewer is hooked in the first episode by the fantastic writing and majestic visuals. This show treats the viewers as adults, hinting at the world beyond through the backgrounds and locations that the story is presented in. From the symbolism of the houses of Piltover to the green glow from the lanes’ toxic air, everything in this show is vibrant with character and heart, something rarely seen in modern shows. The art style is eye-candy from every angle. Act One lacks any dull moments, leaving the audience stunned with the surprising ending and the fallout that the characters must face.
“Betrayal, that pain that feels like it’ll eat you from the inside out, can either break you, or forge you into something greater.” - Act Two
The second act picks up several years after the tragic events of the first. The protagonists and world have grown for better or worse. This act focuses on change, consequences that follow the protagonist’s actions and the attempt to undo the chaos that has taken place. This act allows for the writing and worldbuilding to shine as the character’s stories become increasingly intertwined; their ideals and perspectives clash and change as they mature. Furthermore, the art style allows for the great expression of the characters and their inner conflicts as the plot charges forward.
“We will show them…. We will show them all.” - Act Three
Act three is the climax. Tension is at its highest and every step tilts the scales between a happy ending and total desolation. One highlight of this act is the fight scenes, which feel fast-paced and well-coordinated without sacrificing emotional value. The show avoids filler. Every minute leading up to the conclusion is more invigorating than the last. From a moral standpoint, act three considers the effects of corruption, war and especially sacrifice. The finale is extraordinary, accomplishing a satisfying resolution and a suspenseful cliffhanger in tandem.
This show is a must-see for those searching for an action-packed, tension-fueled adventure. Regardless of whether you’ve played “League Of Legends” or not, Arcane tells a remarkably compelling story. Overall this show is a 9.5/10 for its unmatchable music, unexpectedly well-written story and absolutely beautiful artwork/animation.
