Give Me a T-H-R-E-E Time State Champion

By: Emily McCaslin

Saturday, November 14 at Moore High School, Owasso Varsity Cheer won their third game day state champion title. Competing with a band dance, fight song and great crowd leading ability, OVC (Owasso varsity cheer) coached by Leslie Van Meter and Kelly Walters, received the highest score in the 6A finals competition.

“We came in every day and worked our butts off.” said Brett Harland, a senior on the team.

Practicing a total of almost twenty-four hours just in this past week, OVC worked hard to put together three routines that ultimately got them the gold.

Despite the long hours of practicing, OVC pushed through.

“Don’t stop when you're tired, stop when you're done.” explains Emily Lee, a junior on the team.

Brett also comments on this saying “You can push more than you think you can, you just have to 100% believe in yourself.”

Owasso varsity cheer likes to keep positivity spreading throughout each and every practice. They even have special dress up days during state week such as “Wolf Tee” Wednesday, “Blackout/War” day and “Go for the Gold” day, which is always the day before state.

OVC has a tradition called “Hold Your Rope”. They tie a rope on their bag and promise to “hold each other's ropes” meaning you will have your teammates back no matter what. It means to hold yourself accountable and work hard for each and every person on the team.

One word to describe OVC? “Family” says Senior Mckenna Lynn.

It’s not over for OVC just yet. We can look forward to seeing them again performing at state in January, UCA in Disney World in February, and Stunt the Sport games in the spring.
