Underrated Music: Opinion Piece

By Kai Neuberger

Looking for new music? Maybe it’s out of your typical genre or even within it. Well, here are some good albums you’ve likely never heard of. Scan any of these images to be taken to the album on Spotify!

  1. Hearts Beat Loud by Keegan DeWitt and the cast

  • Genre: Indie

The movie Hearts Beat Loud (rated PG) has a fantastic Indie soundtrack. Even without watching the movie itself, it has music anyone is bound to enjoy.

2. Midnight by Set It Off

  • Genre: Alternative

An album that blurs the lines between pop and typical rock music, referencing topics like anxiety and how to overcome them, it gives its songs a very upbeat meaning to what is viewed as a “darker” genre.

Some songs in this album are explicit!!!

2.5) Phantoms by Marianas Trench

  • Genre: Alternative

A clean ‘alternative’ to the other Alternative album. This is a more popular band,

but not one I hear about outside of the people I’ve personally shown. It's a super upbeat album with that little bit of an edgy twist; this surely can and will brighten your day.

3. Soda by Lache (ft. WILLTHEWISE and Jbreezie)

  • Genre: R&B/Soul

3 artists came together to make this beautiful single, which, although it isn’t an “album”, I say is still worthy of this list. Jbreezie is a rapper who is currently up and coming with over 1,000 listens on his currently uploaded spotify playlists. WILLTHEWISE is just like a current day rapper with over 1,000 listens as well. It is explicit!!!!

4. Baby Now That I’ve Found You by The Foundations

  • Genre: Oldies

With it’s hit song “Build Me Up Buttercup,” this album still has the occasional cover or pop up in today's day and age. If you enjoy songs by artists like ABBA, you will likely enjoy these groovy guys as well.

5. Hallelujah Nights by LANCO

  • Genre: Country

I, personally, don’t typically enjoy any country— aside from good, old “Chicken Fried.” Still, this was actually rather enjoyable and totally something I vibed with (even if it may be out of my genre zone.)  None of its songs are marked as explicit, so it’s just some good, old country for our Southern Okie souls.
