The Gravy Train Keeps Going

By Kelli Casteel

Artist Yung Gravy released his new album, Gasanova, October 2. Since then, his songs have caused new and old fans to come together. It’s also brought him a lot of attention as he had a variety of featured artists. His Twitter account has taken off with lots of followers, Q & A’s and hilarious tweets. He has also come out with lots of new merch that has gained attention.

He released “Yup” first, which gave a good indication of how his new album would be. It gave uplifting, party vibes. Which is exactly how the album is! Though I do prefer his older music with the allures to music from the 60’s-90’s, I think this is a good change of pace. This album is giving him the opportunity to have new fans hopping on the Gravy train.

So, just how good is the album, and which songs are best you ask? Well, I’m here to give you a complete rundown on all of the new songs regarding which are the best, what their vibes are and more.

Warning: Most of these songs are explicit.

Written in order as listed on the album. I listened to the song while writing this to ensure the most accurate and straightforward review.

“Always Saucy” ft. Ski Mask the Slump God and Trippythakid- Love the intro, classic Ski Mask. I really enjoy his verse, as well as the chorus. It’s super catchy, easy to sing to and gets stuck in your head all day. 2nd

“Martha Stewart”- Pretty iffy on this song, catchy beat but not one of his bests. Can get a  bit repetitive, but the lyrics are clever as always. I wonder if Martha Stewart has listened to this song? I’d be interested to hear her thoughts. 7th

“Bag of Chips” ft. Bobbyraps- This song sounds like a hard ratio, trust me- you do not want your girl to be the subject of this song. Personally, not a huge fan of this song. I think the sing-along-ability is missing. The verses and chorus don’t blend together very well, it seems a bit forced. Although, the chorus is so banger. I find myself singing it over and over in my head throughout the day. 6th

“Steve Austin” ft. Young Dolph- Nice beat. This song is just kinda, there. Yanno? It doesn’t stand out, it just exists. 12th

“oops!”- Absolute classic. Probably the most excited to hear this one in person, especially since the crowd would go crazy. It has an awesome chorus, a great song to sing along to at the top of your lungs with windows down. Doesn’t get repetitive, a great example of satirical rap with clever lyrics, is funny and has a great beat. 1st, hands down.

“yup!”- Being the first song to drop on the album, it’s a good classic. Clever lyrics, love the rhyming and beat/lyrical changes. 3rd

“Whole Foods” ft. bbno$- Slow intro, lyrics aren’t the best. Kind of a let down, if I’m being honest. The singing sounds quiet the whole time, compared to the music. This song is definitely a bit more chill than the others, but honestly- I’d rather have a good high energy song than a ‘just okay’ chill song. 14th

“Gas Money”- Good, strong beat. I really enjoy his allures to his other songs. Not one of his best, but the lyrics are so clever and good, it makes me want to jam along to it. Does seem to get repetitive, lyrical wise. 8th

“Party at my Mama’s House”- A. Straight. Banger. Hate to admit it, but I definitely listen to this song everyday on the way to school. I don’t think I have EVER skipped it. Lyrics are clean, beat is good, also love the topic and progression of the story throughout the song. 5th

“Drip On My Dresser” ft. Chief Keef- Eh. Just kinda there. Not a fan of Chief Keef’s verse. It  makes me think of mumble rap which is the complete opposite of Gravy’s style. Not a catchy beat and no stand out lyrics. 13th

“Miami Ice”- I love his voice on this song. I think the lyrics can get a little repetitive but it has a great sing-along-ability. This beat easily gets stuck in my head and always makes me want to tap my foot. 4th

“Swimming Lessons”- Intro is pretty fire, I enjoy the vocals. It kind’ve reminds me of one of the songs played in season one of AHS. Maybe just me, but the vocals give me that vibe. Beat is just okay, the lyrics are pretty clever. I enjoy his allures to different artists. I think it’s missing cohesion, lyrics and beat aren’t similar, which make it feel a bit forced. I don’t think I would ever choose to listen to this song, but if it came on I probably wouldn’t skip it. 9th

“jack money bean” (by bbno$ ft. yung gravy)- Technically a bbno$ song, but it was released with the album. I like the beat, I feel like the lyrics get sunken into it a bit, though. bbno$ is flexing his rap skills, for sure. I think it’s just okay. I don’t think I would ever put this on, but it’s average to listen to. Missing the sing-along-ability. 11th

“Tampa Bay Bustdown” ft. Chief Keef- Technically, this song has been out for awhile. But it came out with the album so there might be a few changes in it that I didn’t notice. Beat is fire and the lyrics are memorable. I enjoy Chief Keef, but I find that it’s hard to understand him sometimes. I prefer rap that I can rap along with, which I have difficulty doing with this song. It makes me wonder when a song about Oklahoma will come out. 10th
