Student Spotlight: Austin Tate

By Timmy Keil

Lead roles or first-place talent show wins are common ground for Owasso’s Austin Tate. At only age 16, Tate has already collected an esteemed portfolio working with some of today’s most notorious actors.

Tate found acting when his next-door neighbor’s involvement inspired him in community theatre. At age 12, Tate turned his admiration into action by getting involved with the school’s theatre program.

Tate has interacted with some of the industry’s most recognizable faces throughout his journey in acting. He has sung in a recording studio with Kevin Chamberlain (most recognizable as Bertrum from Disney’s “Jesse”), as well as other great industry names such as Kristen Chenoweth and Kenny Ortega.

Tate’s idea of his future career is ambitious, but his personality and portfolio make daunting tasks such as being on broadway an achievable reality. Tate’s hard work has landed him a spot in an upcoming documentary.

“We were asked to keep it on the down low and sign a bunch of papers. But it was an incredible experience doing what I love and getting pulled to the side for interviews knowing I might be on TV!” gushed Tate.

Owasso High School hosted its annual talent show in February of this year, and Tate went away with the first-place prize for his singing performance. After watching Tate’s performance, it’s easy to see that his home is on the stage. With his confidence and comfort with a microphone, he struck a chord with the audience and displayed his years of training in theatrical arts.

“I sing every day, whether it’s a song on the radio, karaoke tracks or voice lessons! A real practice day consists of voice lessons with my coach Tammy P. Slack,” says Tate.

Tate’s love for his passion is unmistakable, and he treats his craft with the utmost respect. Getting involved in theatre camps and traveling around the country for workshops demonstrate Tate’s complete dedication to fine arts.

Currently, Tate is taking a haitus from showbusiness to find the best role for him– one that will suit his background and offer him an accomplishing challenge.
