Spring Sports Senior Reflection

By Ian Busking

There are many seniors throughout Owasso who have just wrapped up their high school careers. Whether that lasted the whole four years or just one season, every one of them overcame many challenges, made lifelong friends and, during the process, made lots of memories.

Tennis

The first senior who has just played her last high school matches in tennis was Libby Perkins. Perkins finished 4th in the class 6A state championships in singles. There are two main people who have pushed Perkins to being the tennis player that she is today.

She states that, “My biggest inspiration throughout my time on the tennis team was my older brother Sam Perkins. He was the one who influenced me to play tennis, and I always looked up to him growing up. My other inspiration is my younger brother Joey Perkins. He always works so hard.”

Perkins is not going to continue her tennis career to play for a school team in college, but she hopes to play intramural games with her older brother Sam at OU.

Another senior that is competing for the last time in her career is Emily Scorsone. Scorsone has been running track since seventh grade. During those years, Scorsone never envisioned herself being as into the sport as she is now. It has been a long journey since the beginning of her running career and it started out bittersweet.

Scorsone remarks, “In seventh grade I didn’t know very many people on the team but a memory that stuck with me was meeting my best friend, Majesty, who would eventually run the next four years with me. I remember going to every track meet and just having fun with my teammates in the beginning.”

Scorsone has one last meet which is Saturday, May 15 in which she is looking to give it her all in hopes to get a state medal. Scorsone does not plan on running in college but she will be attending Oklahoma State University while majoring in biology.

Shot put & Discus

Next up is senior Ontario Wilson, who throws discus and shot put. After finishing the football season in the fall, Wilson decided to take on throwing. He learned from the beginning of this year that even the easiest looking sports are very challenging and take a lot of skill in order to excel in.

Wilson says that, “Learning the spin was the hardest part. The glide was easy as long as you were explosive, but it can only get you so far. I wanted to learn the spin, so I watched countless videos and would go to the throwing pit an hour before each practice and an hour after practice. Eventually, I was able to get the spin down and everything clicked. At this point I just needed to speed the spin up. There were still some technical issues I had to overcome but as time went on my spin got better and better.”

Wilson just competed in his last meet at Regionals where, after the meet, the nerves were at an all time high. Wilson as of now does not plan on throwing in college, “but if the opportunity was brought upon me I’d take it in an instant.” explains Wilson. Wilson is going to continue his academic career at the University of Arkansa and plans on majoring in mechanical engineering while minoring in music.

Soccer

The last senior who had recently just played in his last high school game is senior Spencer Frey. Frey is a huge role model to all of the boys on the soccer team and has left a huge impact on everyone. Frey started his love for soccer in the fifth grade when he first joined a recreational team. There were many things that the sport of soccer did for Frey.

Frey states, “This sport has had an amazing impact on my life. I honestly do not know where I would be today without soccer. It gave me my friends, an outlet when I needed one and showed me what being a family is. Not only do I find great enjoyment in playing soccer, but I made lifelong friendships and memories.”

It was a tough night when Frey played his last game as an Owasso Ram a couple weeks ago. Frey enjoyed it a great deal but, after realizing that this would be his last time wearing an Owasso jersey, was easily one of Frey’s, “hardest and saddest” moments as he recalls.

Frey will not be continuing his soccer career on an athletic scholarship but will be playing intramural soccer with friends. Frey is attending OSU in hopes to become an occupational therapist.

It is really emotional to see many of the seniors' high school sports careers and even as a whole come to an end. All of which have made a huge impact on Owasso, helping their teams win, competing to their best ability, and representing our school how it should be. This can be looked at as an end to their journey or a new beginning starting a new chapter in their lives. Thank you to all of the class of 2021 for everything you all have done.
