Service-based businesses teens can start this summer

By Atalie Sherman

Summer is a fantastic time to start a new job—especially for students. The flexibility summer provides allows teens to make money without compromising their vacation plans. By choosing the type of work done, students can enjoy their break while reaping the benefits of their hard work. Whether it be working independently or with others, there are plenty of service-based businesses one can start to serve their community in the coming months.

With many people traveling away from home this summer, pet care is a priority for most families. Everyone wants to be sure their family pet is well taken care of, and having someone to check in with their animals provides owners with great peace of mind. Depending on the amount of time one has to work this summer, dog walking and pet sitting are both options for businesses that are in demand and easily accessible. Either option can be done routinely for good amounts of money, especially when one exceeds in providing quality care. Checking in with neighbors about when they are going on a trip, or even inquiring about dog walking with a few dog-owning families in the neighborhood can both be easy ways to get a summer business up and running.

Hauling Recycling

Hauling neighborhood recycling can be a great way to make money this summer. By offering to take glass, paper or plastic products to a nearby sorting center, one can provide a helpful service that isn’t too time-consuming. Whether collecting weekly or bi-weekly, reaching out to neighbors is an easy way to get started that can encourage those nearby to recycle as well. Charging for a month's worth of recycling can add up, especially if collecting for multiple people. By making the process convenient and filling a need in one’s community, hauling recycling can be a great service-based business to start.

Mowing Lawns/Landscaping

As the weather continues to warm, most people will require landscaping services this summer. By mowing lawns, pulling weeds or planting flowers, teens can make quick money for a few hours of physical labor. As is true with service-based businesses, one can work as many times as they desire, and finding work in one’s neighborhood shouldn’t be a challenge. Inquiring with elderly neighbors or neighbors that travel often can be a great place to start. By simply taking half an hour to mow a lawn or pick weeds, one can make good money on a schedule that works for them, all while helping out their neighborhood community.

Service-based businesses provide a unique opportunity for students to make money without compromising their summer plans. These businesses lend themselves to easy scheduling, making them ideal for busy students that want flexibility. Moreso, teens can benefit the people around them by providing valuable services, all while being compensated for their hard work.
