Owasso Varsity Cheer Takes State!

This year, to no one’s surprise, Owasso Varsity cheer have become state champions once again! This is their sixth time back to back winning state. This year’s state competition was held at Union High School UMAC. They were scored on different components such as tumbling, stunts, crowd involvement, technique, difficulty and more. The cheer team faced these challenges head on with lots of hard work and practice and clearly exceeded expectations, as per usual. It’s no surprise that Owasso is extremely proud of its Varsity Cheer Squad!

From the second they roll out the mat, they’re being judged on the quality of their performance and their skill. The cheer teams at the competition are scored based on cleanliness, difficulty and execution of the routine. The judges drop the highest and lowest scores, and then the final score is composed of all the judges’ scores together with the non-extreme medians of each individual score. 

The Owasso Varsity cheerleading team is definitely strongest at tumbling. They still work hard at this, despite their inherent skill, along with all the other aspects of cheerleading.

Speaking of working hard, the cheer squad unfortunately had to change their routine at least five times before the team could perfect it due to student illness or injuries. This was of course a stressful aspect of their preparation, but clearly, it didn’t hold them back from a massive success. This was such a big stress to the team, however, that they actually had two backup routines in place just in case they weren’t able to execute the specified routine they had been working on. Once again, these talented students were able to pull through as a team. 

“There were a lot of stress points, but we still managed to pull through at the very end and made the final routine work,” says Addison Rhoades.

Addison went on about the team's strengths and weaknesses, and how they came out to make for the final result, which was of course a Rams victory!

The Owasso Varsity Cheer is a strong competitor not only in Oklahoma, but the nation when it comes to cheerleading, and it’s important to recognize them for their hard work and sacrifice this year.  As the cheer team continues on their journey this season, please go support them!
