Owasso Rams boys and girls Wrestling

Both the Owasso boys and girls wrestling teams have had a successful start to their 2022-2023 season. With multiple wrestlers placing at each tournament, the teams have high hopes continuing on with the season. However, being a successful athlete doesn’t come easy. It takes lots of focus, hard work, dedication and a knowledgeable coaching staff who can lead their team to victory.

Junior on the Lady Rams wrestling team, Lizzy Peterson, states that “Our program has the best coaches that continue to encourage us.”

A good coach, who knows the sport and understands how hard to push their athletes, is a huge part of their success rate. Both the boys' and girls' wrestling teams have new coaches this year who are capable of leading their teams to victory.

A junior on the Rams wrestling team, Bryson Humphries, explains, “I think that our new coach Kyle has helped me the most just because he pushes me really hard.”

With their new coaches, the Owasso wrestling teams have had success lately within the tournaments they have attended. The girls recently went to Catoosa for a tournament and came home with 8 wrestlers who placed. Sidney Milligan came in first, Mak Gregg, Zion Moore and Lizzy Peterson brought home second, Presley Dillard took fourth, Mariah Ahmed claimed fifth and Khari Shelton and Kannon Moseley got sixth.

The boys also found success at the Jenks tournament. They had five athletes place, with Chad Herbert and Tyler Rich winning first, Bryson Humphries coming in second, Braxton Bacon getting third and Mason Moore placing sixth. This type of victory only comes from athletes who are passionate and dedicated to their sport.

Every athlete needs a reason to play their sport, and for Peterson, it’s “because it always interested me after learning that my grandpa also wrestled in high school.”

Humphries has a similar reason to Peterson’s. His being “because my dad kind of put me in it when I was young, and I just kind of fell in love with it. And I like winning.”

As the Owasso wrestling teams continue on with their season, they hope to find more victories and make it to the state finals. However, getting there will be no easy task. The wrestlers must continue to train hard at every practice if they want to have a chance at winning state.

Humphries states that “It takes a lot of hard work, definitely dedication. You know you have to really love the sport to be that good.”
