Owasso High School has recently introduced a new resource for students: “Industry of the Month.” Each month, multiple representatives from a particular industry will be available in the Performing Arts Center. This event is organized to suit the needs of students, teaching them about different professions and interviewing those who work in said field of interest. Mrs. Sewell, OHS’s college and career counselor, provides more information on this recent development.

“The goal of this initiative is to allow OHS junior and senior students to explore their postsecondary options,” Mrs. Sewell states.

This becoming resource is intended to clear muddy waters when it comes down to the details of a profession. By speaking with industry professionals, students are able to get a realistic idea of the career they are interested in pursuing.

Following up on this aspect, Mrs. Sewell adds, “My vision is to allow students to see a wide variety of positions within the industry at every educational level.”

She implies that multiple people from different backgrounds with much experience under their belt will be available to share their knowledge about their respective position. To students, this widens their scope beyond preconceived ideas they might have about a field.

These monthly events are structured in an efficient manner perfectly fit for a busy OHS student. Each “Industry of the Month”  will serve as a drop-in event. Available during both lunches, students have the opportunity to drop in and use their time in a way that is valuable for their future.

With further context on the set-up of these events, Mrs. Sewell explains, “Each industry representative will have a bistro table with a list of conversation starter questions for students. It will be a casual come-and-go style event.”

In order for “Industry of the Month” to be a success, the student body must utilize this resource. Not only does it help when planning for the future, one can have the chance to ask questions and leave with satisfying answers from a professional. Connections also play a meaningful role in this new development at OHS. Being greatly involved with students at OHS, Mrs. Sewell hopes for “Industry of the Month” to be as successful as possible.

“My goal is for every student at OHS to leave with a plan for their future that they are satisfied with and brings them joy,” Mrs. Sewell expresses.

Be on the lookout for each Industry of the Month; drop by during both lunches, ask questions and receive valuable answers!
