Owasso Football’s Keys To Success

By Ian Busking

The Owasso Rams football team has been more than outstanding for the past few years, since winning the state championship in 2017 and then again last year in 2019. It does not take just one player or coach to lead you to the amount of glory that the Rams have had lately, but it is evident that Owasso produces stars.

One of the players who has been here throughout all the wins and few losses the Rams have obtained is senior Anthony Lawrence. Playing on such a great team, you aren’t just handed a varsity jersey and get to play, you have to earn it. There are many things that had to happen for Lawrence to become a starter for Owasso.

Lawrence exclaims that, “I had to plot in the dirt. My sophomore year, I was fifth string and one of the worst lineman on the team. I was a grunt, a nobody and was overlooked in all opportunities. I had to learn how to plot and create my own opportunities. It took much humility, mental will and an extreme amount of dedication and hard work.”

With the hard work that Lawrence put in, it just goes to show how dedicated the players are to the team. On a team like Owasso, you have to do anything and everything to be a key player to making the starting spot in the most important games.

Another key player to Owasso’s main success is one of the biggest names known in Owasso football. Sophomore Cole Adams, the stud wide receiver, does so much to ensure that he is ready to play his best in every game.

Adams says, “We have to have a great week of practice and go 1-0 with the practices before going 1-0 under the Friday night lights, and also going to meetings and watching film.”

Helping the Rams win almost every game he plays in, Adams has scored eight touchdown catches in nine games this season— with a total of almost 600 yards.

Another standout player for the Owasso Rams is junior Jake Clifton, who is one of the strong safeties on the team. From going undefeated all year until the semifinals against the Trojans, Clifton has something to say about the game that took them out of the playoffs.

“First of all, I didn’t take that game as a loss. We never lose, we just learn. As a team, we have learned to stay hungry and progress now. Secondly we are just going to go back to work right now, and stay the course. We will be back and [we will be] strong.”

There are so many people on and off the football field that impact the Owasso football atmosphere that don’t even know how much of the credit they deserve!

Adams told me that, “We couldn’t be a great team without the coaches, trainers, and managers. We have great people helping us in every way possible.”

Even though the season has come to an end faster than expected, the boys will be back and hopefully bring the gold home next year. Stay tuned for any news over the football team as they continue to work over the offseason to prepare for next season!
