A Smoothie Oh So Groovy

By Jack Fenner

On January 20, Owasso is getting its very own Tropical Smoothie Cafe right off of 96th and 129th. Tropical Smoothie is becoming an increasingly popular chain in other parts of Tulsa, with lines almost always going out the door. So with the open date coming near, I decided to go check out one of their locations to see if you should plan on attending their grand opening.

When I walked into Tropical Smoothie Cafe for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere. Their restaurants are very small but they are perfect places to go if you are looking to get some work done in a place other than your home. It’s a cozy restaurant that could rival Panera for all your studying and homework needs.

As for the menu, there aren’t too many options for food but I still can't be mad because it's a good, healthy break from all the Tex-Mex and fried chicken that Owasso is full of. Though with the smoothies, it’s another story for options. For every smoothie (too many to count) you have the choice of putting in supplements and other ingredients like almonds or oats. This leaves a lot of room for making your own one-of-a-kind smoothie, so I really give the cafe props for this one.

For my meal I decided to get a chicken caprese panini and a sunrise sunset smoothie (strawberry and pineapple), which is one of their most popular options. While the caprese panini was not anything special, it was something that I would choose over KFC or Zaxby’s any day of the week. When I tried the smoothie though, it all came together. If you don’t have the best smoothies, it's a bold move to use the word in your restaurant’s name. Whoever founded Tropical Smoothie obviously knew this and strived to make the best smoothie known to man. When I say this, I am not kidding. This was the greatest smoothie I have ever had the opportunity to try. It was mainly the ice to juice combo, which made it perfect. I can speak from experience that too much ice can completely ruin a smoothie and too little just makes juice.

I will say with confidence that Tropical Smoothie Cafe has mastered the craft of smoothie making and you will be sure to catch me there on January 20 when our very own Owasso location opens!
