Lady Rams Softball Battles It Out In The State Championship

By Ian Busking

The Owasso Lady Rams played the Southmoore Sabercats in the 6A Softball State Championship. The Lady Rams fought hard but barely lost with a score of 3-2 in the end. The Rams season came to an end but not without giving it all they had.

Before falling to the Sabercats in the championship, the Rams won six straight postseason games to get them into State. In the championship game, the Rams and Sabercats had a long, hard fought battle.

In the first inning, the Lady Rams only drew a walk and another base by a “hit by pitch.” In the bottom of the first, the Sabercats hit one home run off of the first pitch to make the score 1-0.

In the second inning, the same thing happened and the Rams still hadn’t put a single run up while the Sabercats managed to get another run scored which made the game 2-0. In the third inning, both the Rams and the Sabercats left scoreless, but not for long. The Lady Rams scored their first run, making the score 2-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Rams scored their second run with Sarah Campbell hitting a clean hit to bring in her teammate for the equalizer at 2-2.

After a very tense sixth and seventh inning, the teams went into an extra inning. The Lady Rams almost put a run up to win but just came up short and the Sabercats ended up taking home the state championship.

For a lot of the Lady Rams softball players, this was their first time competing in a state championship, like Junior pitcher Lauren St. John.

While asked what it was like experiencing a state championship, she replied with, “The State Championship was amazing because not many people have that opportunity. We are a very young group of players and weren’t expected to make it that far, so it was incredible.”

Despite losing the championship this year, the Lady Rams are going to do everything to make it back there and try to win a ring.

“To try and win State next year I will continue to work on my pitching. As a team we will work on the basic fundamentals and play together as one unit”, states St. John.

Sadly, there will be no more softball games until next year but when fall of 2021 rolls around, be sure to go support your Owasso Lady Rams!
