Forging a new path: Screaming Earth Records

By Averie Grace-Hayes

For so long, Owasso hasn’t had many record stores. With the love for the past coming back into trend, it's only inevitable that Owasso would gain a Mom-and-Pop establishment, with influences of trendy vintage clothes and up and coming musicians around Owasso.

For owners Ben and Rose Sloma, the dream of owning a record store has been a long time coming. On September six of this year, the couple opened Screaming Earth Records–located at 12336 East 86th St North.

Rose Sloma states, “Owasso is a great community. We love the town and the people…We wanted the locals to have a place to come to without having to travel into [Tulsa].”

With Screaming Earth being a new business, the Slomas wanted to grow in the Owasso community. With this in mind, they wanted to give the space for independent artists to grow.

“We had several local artists perform during our grand opening and wanted to showcase more independent artists to give them a place to perform […] We want to be a place where people can come to discover some of these artists. So, while we grow, we want to help them grow a fanbase as well.”

With owning a record store, the Slomas have a tremendous love for music and a remarkable connection to tangible media.

“We’ve been music lovers our whole lives. [...] And we want to share our passion with everyone else.” Rose Sloma resumes “We are both big into punk rock.”

This family owned business is earning its place in the Owasso business world. The Sloma’s have their vintage vinyls, vintage record players and collections all distributed from different areas around the world. Some of the vinyls and the players in the shop are even from their personal collections.

Rose Sloma expresses, “We hope more people have the opportunity to come in, and if they have a collection that they wish to sell, we’d be more than happy to look.”

Overall, Screaming Earth Records is earning its place and changing the culture of Owasso and Owasso’s independent music.

Rose Sloma announces “We’re hoping to have a big impact on the Owasso music scene. We are here to help Owasso get access to music they already love, as well as help the community discover other artists they don’t know they love yet.”
