Student Poll: Worst Christmas Movie

By Jackson Nester

With the holiday season right around the corner, I decided to make a poll on what the absolute worst Christmas movie is according to OHS students. After asking around in class and putting a couple of polls on social media, the results are in with number one being the most hated Christmas movie:

  1. “Snow Buddies”

Seeing this movie on the list was not a shocker, but seeing it so high was definitely a surprise. “Snow Buddies” is a Disney film that was released in 2009. The film follows a group of puppies who travel to Alaska and end up in an exciting dogsled race across the state. This film is child-friendly, and, for that reason, the plot isn’t all that intricate. However, that isn’t the reason this film is hated by so many. After doing some extensive research, I dug out something terrible. On the set of “Snow Buddies'' a virus spread amongst the puppies. Six of the 28 puppies fell ill, and in addition to that, five of the puppies died.

2. “Elf”

This Christmas classic was released in 2003 and stars famous actor, Will Ferrel. Ferrel played the role of Buddy who was raised by elves in the North Pole and eventually sent down to Earth where he meets his biological father where he takes on the challenges of society in New York City during the holidays. This film is a staple in most households during the holiday season, but for this same reason is hated. It’s similar to when you hear Christmas songs over and over again—they just become annoying and irritating. This is how a lot of students felt about “Elf” and many paired the term “overrated” with the film.

3. “The Santa Clause”

The last movie on this most-hated list goes to “The Santa Clause.” This film was released in 1994 and is a Disney film. The film follows a father who accidentally kills Santa Claus on Christmas Eve and is then sent to the North Pole to become a replacement Santa. This film is understandably on the most-hated list because it brings a rather dark theme, death, into a merry, jolly holiday.

Honorable Mention: Hallmark Christmas Movies

Many students expressed hatred towards Hallmark Christmas movies, but the students were unable to provide a specific film that they despised. However, due to the amount of negative comments towards these types of movies they deserved to be recognized as a part of this list.
