El Mejor: Teacher of the Week Mr. Mendez

By Caitlin Locker

The art of learning a new language is something that most Owasso High School students endure within their class schedule. Although a seemingly daunting task, the teachers within our school system make studying a language and culture not only interesting but enjoyable too. Recently, Sr. Mendez, resident “OG” and Spanish teacher at OHS, was awarded the well deserved teacher of the week award.

Sr. Mendez, a teacher going on eight years in the Owasso district, is a name that often comes up when mentioning the “coolest” teachers. Mendez is one of the Spanish instructors and when asked what his favorite part about the job was, he conveys his appreciation for creating a bond with his students.

“I enjoy teaching a lot, but my favorite part is connecting with students and laughing with them.”

Sr. Mendez not only dedicates time to his work within the classroom, but also to his many interests and hobbies outside of school. From guitar shredding, to kick-flipping skateboards, and jamming out with his friends, it is evident that he is cooler than we will all ever be. Aside from his more hipster activities, Mendez puts a heavy emphasis on spending time with his family and attending church.

“I enjoy being at church and growing in faith and community: I love my family and there’s simply no better time spent than with them.”

Teacher of the week is often rewarded to staff that go above and beyond when interacting and teaching their classes. It is evident that Mr. Mendez fits this description as he creates unique and interactive lessons that make the use of Spanish even more fun. When asked what advice he would give to any high schoolers, he feels the bigger picture beyond the walls of high school is important.

“Enjoy the good times with gratitude, and endure the difficult times knowing perseverance leads to growth: always thank those who care for you along the way.”

Even though taking a language may be a requirement, it is one of the best things I did in my school career. I had the pleasure of having Mr. Mendez in my eighth grade year Spanish class, and it was truly a “gnarly” time. Not only did my fellow classmates and I experience some creative lessons, but also numerous guitar solos and a couple games of SKATE thrown in also. Mr. Mendez truly cares about the well being of his students and the title of Teacher of the Week is well deserved.
