New movies coming out in 2023

Many places of entertainment were shut down after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving many people stuck in the house. In 2023, with the pandemic being under control, establishments are now open – including movie theaters. Although reopenings happened over the course of 2021, much film production was halted due to COVID-19. So, when people were excited to get out again, there wasn’t much to see. Fortunately, the film line-up for 2023 is promising.

“Creed III”

Release date: March 3, 2023

Directed by: Michael B. Jordan

“Creed III” is the third edition of the Rocky spin-off series starring Michael B. Jordan. In this film, Adonis deals with new challenges as he faces an optimistic new boxer.

“65”

Release date: March 10, 2023

Directed by: Scott Beck, Bryan Woods

“65” is a Sci-fi thriller about an astronaut (Adam Driver) crashing onto an unknown planet. It is later revealed as prehistoric Earth, set 65 million years in the past.

“John Wick: Chapter 4”

Release date: March 24, 2023

Directed by: Chad Stahelski

This film has been highly anticipated by John Wick fans, so this addition to the popular action franchise will leave the theaters busy. Keanu Reeves hints at a not-so-happy ending for this film.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie”

Release date: April 7, 2023

Directed by: Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic

This movie has been heavily talked about over the last few months, with memes regarding Chris Pratt’s involvement in the film. Nintendo fans and children alike will sit down to enjoy this hilariously-casted movie.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”

Directed by: James Gunn

In this film, the Guardians must face a new challenge in the skies, an important mission as a part of Phase five of the MCU. Things are solemn since the loss of a friend in Vol. 2.

“Fast X”

Release date: May 19, 2023

Directed by: Justin Lin

The plot of “Fast X” is yet to be revealed, but Gen Xers are excited regardless. Vin Diesel and the whole fast family will be returning for this film. This is part one of a two-movie bundle (rumored to be the last of the series), in which part two is expected to come out in May of 2024.

“The Little Mermaid”

Directed by: Rob Marshall

The live-action “The Little Mermaid” is highly anticipated by young children and Disney adults alike. With new compositions from Lin-Manuel Miranda, the soundtrack will feature unique renditions for the underwater princess.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”

Directed by: Joaquim Dos Santos

Arguably one of the MOST anticipated films of 2023, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” will take theaters by storm following the ever-popular first movie, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” In this movie, Miles is pitted against the other Spiders when a new threat arises, and the heroes can’t decide on a solution.

“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”

Directed by: Steven Caple Jr.

This new addition to the Transformers franchise takes the viewer back to the 90s as it follows a storyline of a three-way conflict between Transformers and new intruders.

“Killers of the Flower Moon”

Release date: May 2023

Directed by: Martin Scorsese

Based on the non-fiction book, “Killers of the Flower Moon” tells the story of brutal murders after the attempted theft of land (Oklahoma oil fields) from the Osage people by white Americans.

“Barbie”

Release date: July 21, 2023

Directed by: Greta Gerwig

With the iconic casting of Margot Robbie, Barbie is kicked out of Barbieland and has to navigate her way through the human world.

“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”

Release date: Nov. 17, 2023

Directed by: Francis Lawrence

This film is a prequel to the novel, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” in which a mentor’s involvement is revealed years before the events of the original.

“Wonka”

Release date: Dec. 15, 2023

Directed by: Paul King

In this version of Willy Wonka, Timothée Chalamet (a young Willy Wonka) follows the storyline of him meeting the Oompa-Loompas for the first time.

“The Color Purple”

Release date: Dec. 20, 2023

Directed by: Blitz Bazawule

Inspired by the popular book, “The Color Purple” is a musical adapted for the big screen, with popular actresses Halle Bailey and Taraji P. Henson (as seen in the movie “Hidden Figures”).
