Thrifting: The Better Alternative
By Libby Booth
The saying “one man's trash is another man's treasure” only holds true to the hobby of thrifting. While some people find it gross or cheap to use other peoples' discarded clothes, I think it's nothing short of smart to stop by your local thrift store and see what kind of unique pieces you can come by.
Thrifting is not only an insanely awesome way to save money on buying your clothes but it's also better for the environment as well. It's so amazing that we live in a time where you can save the planet by stopping by a thrift store and purchasing clothes already in circulation opposed to having a whole new item made. Most of the time, a lot of the items sold at a thrift store are in just as good of shape as a brand new clothing item. However, if they're a bit worn down, they often look a lot cooler and have more of a vintage feel to them, which is currently in style.
I’ve been buying most of my clothes from thrift stores for the past year and only have amazing things to say about my experience with second hand shopping. My favorite clothing items in my closet have come from thrift stores for crazy low prices. It's gotten to the point where I can create a whole outfit with just pieces that I’ve found at thrift stores.
To sell you on the idea of implementing thrifting into your shopping agenda, I’m going to show you some of my all time favorite pieces and outfits that I’ve gotten from various thrift stores.
This all purple thrifted outfit is my all time favorite. I found both pieces at completely different times and stores but they both match perfectly together. This could be an adorable completed outfit with a pair of white or black sneakers and a small handbag. Definitely one that I’m going to be wearing a lot this summer.
This next outfit is a thrifted vintage baseball jacket with a forest green colored ‘5’ on the outside, paired with a forest green crop-top that I made out of a thrifted dress. Though the jeans aren't thrifted, you could easily find a pair just like them at almost any thrift store. This outfit is super cute if you’re feeling a little lazy but still want to look a little dressed up.
While it is fun to come up with and create entire outfits from your thrifting experience, it's also really exciting to just come across an individual piece that you can pair with something you already have at home. Here is a look at some of my favorite individual clothing items that I've picked up from thrift stores throughout my year
All of these super cool items were all around $10 or less. I’m overly excited to find some outfits to pair these items with and wear them out.
Thrifting is such an awesome way of saving money and I highly encourage everyone to maybe step out of their comfort zone with clothing and try to see what kind of unique pieces or outfits you can come up with. I never used to think about thrifting until I finally got tired of spending $50 on a single shirt from Urban Outfitters. So if you’re over wasting your money, get out to a local thrift store and save your money and the environment while finding an amazing new wardrobe.
