“Grand Army” Show Review

By ShayLa Blake

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services out there and often has a wide variety of network shows to add to your binge list. In recent years, Netflix has gained more popularity for its original shows and movies, going on to win awards and capture audiences everywhere. On October 16, Netflix dropped one of my favorite original shows to date, “Grand Army."

“Grand Army” is an ensemble TV show that follows five high schoolers, all in varying grade levels, at the largest public high school in Brooklyn. The main cast is extremely diverse and provides perspective by allowing the viewer to see the trials and tribulations from all walks of life. “Grand Army” provides representation for numerous communities of people, outside of just the main cast, and seizes every opportunity to make all voices feel heard and empowered.

Besides the diversity in “Grand Army,” one of my favorite things about the show is the dynamic way it’s filmed. Like every show, “Grand Army” is not without its dramatizations, but unlike other shows, it is filmed in a way that makes it very personal for the viewer. The show explores the idea of “aesthetics” in films similar to that of HBO’s “Euphoria,” just not in such a bold way. The aesthetic and filming style is unique to each character which helps reveal the characters personal identities and breaks the norm of how ensemble style shows are typically filmed.

Because “Grand Army” is centered around teens of all ages, the show really has something for everyone to relate to. The show highlights what life is really like for teens in a fairly realistic way (with a little Hollywood flair here and there). Despite the show being in an urban setting, the topics discussed and portrayed throughout the show could reach just about any teenager living anywhere. Such topics are raw and real and, at times, triggering or graphic to people sensitive to topics of violence or trauma. If you are someone who looks for a show that makes you feel all the feels, then I highly recommend checking out “Grand Army” on Netflix.
