80’s Movies That Gen-Z Can Appreciate

By Colin Udall

After looking at the impressive lineup, it is no surprise that the 1980s brought some of cinema's greatest hits. What makes these movies impressive is beyond that of nostalgia and good memories, as they have much entertainment to offer— even among today’s movie scene.

1. “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” (1986)

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a must watch that can be recommended to any movie-goer. This movie’s comedic style is iconic and has not aged with time. Following the story of stereotypical highschool student Ferris Bueller, the 1986 film follows his adventures during a phony sick day he has devised. The humor is right on point for it’s highschool target audience. “Ferris Bueller” is fun in its purest form, and a must watch.

2. “Back to the Future” (1985)

“Back to the Future” is a classic, although is surprisingly a fun movie. This movie comes with a guaranteed laugh, as well as two hours of entertainment. The characters are written very well, and the zany nature of fan favorites such as “Doc” will leave a lasting impression. It’s fun to see how everyday life has changed from the time periods in this movie, and the recent obsession with vintage aesthetics will certainly be pleasing for many people to see. The movie follows Marty McFly’s series of unfortunate events in which he is trapped in the past. The small town setting and ridiculous situation make for good humor and interesting plot points

3.”Blade Runner” (1982)

Fans of “Star Wars” can certainly appreciate this movie starring Harrison Ford. A darker take on sci-fi than other movies at the time, it is more reminiscent of “Alien” (1979) in tone and feel. While “Blade Runner” is certainly not short of action violence, it does have deep themes on conscious and human nature itself. “Blade Runner” has three different cuts: Theatrical Release, Director’s Cut, and Final Cut. The Final Cut version has everything director Ridley Scott hoped for, and is the recommended version. It may be surprising to find out many sci-fi fans have not seen this film, as it is a stand out in the science fiction genre.
